Upper eyelid ptosis
Left upper eyelid ptosis.
It is advisable to make and fit a new prosthesis before the ptosis repair is carried out. At this point the upper eyelid ptosis is often improved because the new eye re-establishes the normal support for the levator muscle complex that moves the upper eyelid. Any residual ptosis is assessed and corrected by the oculo plastic surgeon using a variety of techniques depending on the amount of lift required and degree of levator function evidenced.
A common technique is levator resection. This is done anteriorly through the site of the intended skin crease of the upper eyelid, or posteriorly through the conjunctiva. The levator muscle is detached from the surrounding tissues and shortened before being reattached to the upper edge of the tarsal plate.
